About the role


Remote Legal is looking for skilled Legal Proofreaders to join our dedicated team. In this role, you’ll review and proof legal deposition, hearing, and other proceeding transcripts, working with the Transcript Production department to ensure a seamless experience to our clients and accurate record capture every step of the way.


The Legal Proofreader is responsible for reviewing deposition and legal transcripts to ensure accuracy, completeness, and client-ready quality. Proofers review transcripts according to assigned proofing levels, verify formatting and content, identify errors, and provide constructive feedback to editors through redlines, comments, and creates scorecards. This role requires strong attention to detail, adherence to deadlines, and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality.


What you'll do

  • Promptly acknowledge receipt of each proofreading assignment upon notification.
  • Consistently meet all assigned deadlines.
  • Download and review all necessary resources required to complete the assignment effectively.
  • Provide proofreading services according to the level assigned by the Transcript Production Team.
  • Carefully review transcripts for accuracy, grammar, punctuation, formatting, and consistency.
  • Review and clear indiscernible portions whenever possible using the available audio.
  • Verify the accuracy of the transcript caption and index and make corrections as needed.
  • Address questions or notes left by the editor in the transcript, or escalate unresolved issues to the Transcript Production Team.
  • Ensure Track Changes is enabled to produce a redline version of the transcript reflecting all edits.
  • Include instructional comments within the transcript to help editors improve accuracy on future assignments.
  • Provide feedback to the editor by submitting: a redlined transcript, illustrative comments explaining errors or corrections, and a completed proofreading scorecard in accordance with the scoring rubric.
  • If necessary, request deadline extensions at least one day prior to the deadline.
  • Upload the completed transcript and invoice upon completion of the assignment.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all information and materials entrusted to you.


Qualifications

  • Required:
    • Experience proofreading legal deposition transcripts
    • Experience proofing to audio
    • Attention to detail
    • Ability to meet deadlines
    • Understanding of the parts of a legal transcript, including formatting and styles
    • Ability to adhere to an established style guide
    • Good communication skills with Remote Legal internal teams to collaborate and ensure alignment on deadlines and transcript quality standards
  • Preferred:
    • Prior court reporting experience
    • Prior digital scoping experience
